It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Werner Heinrich Schmidt of Edmonton on November 20, 2025, at the age of 87.

Werner will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Ruth, his sons, Stephen (Tonya) and Robert (Marissa), and granddaughters, Heidi and Elenna. Though quiet and pensive, Werner loved his family fiercely and took pride in his heritage, never passing up a chance to watch German football and have a beer with his sons.

Werner was born on September 25, 1938, in Berlin, Germany to Heinrich and Paula Schmidt (nee Nowak). He was the youngest of four children and is predeceased by his parents and sisters: Hilda, Gisela, and Edith. Werner grew up in Berlin and Velden, just outside of Nuremberg, before travelling to Switzerland, Australia, and finally landing in Canada. He settled in Edmonton where he continued to hone his craft as a baker, met the love of his life, and started a beautiful family.
