Pranjyoti Mangat Obituary

January 19, 1968 – May 17, 2024

It is with profound grief that we share our beloved Jyoti’s passing on May 17, 2024.

The daughter of Raghbir and Jasbir Mangat, Jyoti immigrated to Canada from India at the age of 18 months. She was raised in St. Albert with her siblings Aman Mangat (Luke Struckman) and Bindoo Mangat. In 2012, Jyoti married Rob Swart who was her loving partner and with her to the end.

Jyoti always knew that she wanted to be a teacher, just like her mother. She loved kids. They made her laugh, kept her young and gave her hope for the future. Jyoti spent her entire teaching career in St. Albert. She taught at Lorne Akins and Bellerose, becoming principal at Bellerose Composite High School in 2015.

Jyoti earned three university degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Arts (English); a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s Degree in Education. She was a published author and a voracious reader.

Jyoti was smart, engaging, articulate, and fierce. She loved life, she loved her family, she loved her friends and colleagues. She was passionate for social justice, gender equity, LGBTQ2+ rights, public education, and democracy. She was direct and spoke her mind. She did not suffer fools.

Jyoti was an avid traveler who loved her trips to India, England, France, the Netherlands and especially Ireland. She loved seeing the world and the new experiences it brought.

She was proud to be Punjabi and cherished the time spent with her family and her community. All those trips to Mill Woods were treasured memories for her. Life long friendships were started and nurtured with many “cousins” in the community.

Family was important to Jyoti. She took the time to connect with family members, especially her cousins. She was very fond of her nephews Jas Paul and Ilyas Singh and loved nothing more than to shower them with gifts but hated losing to them at any games, video or otherwise. She had plans to secretly practice Mario Cart and Connect Four in hopes of redemption. Her nieces and nephews adored her and officially ranked her as their Number 1 auntie.

We are heartbroken by our loss but will carry her love forward. Please come and join us in celebrating her life at 12 pm on Saturday, May 25 at Edmonton Crematorium and Funeral Home (6403 Roper Road NW, Edmonton, AB, T6B 3G6).
