Dinesh “Billy” Puri was a charismatic, worldly man who made everyone around him feel loved and welcome. A pillar of strength in the home he built, he offered both shelter and joy to all who entered. A gracious host at heart—chef, grill master, and mixologist—he was in his element entertaining those he loved.
Born in Amritsar, India, to Durgas Das and Shakuntula Puri, Dinesh was the eldest of five siblings (Devinder, Deepika, Vibha, Ruma, & Anika). Affectionately known as Billy, he was a confident, loving brother, a talented cricket player, and a charismatic soul with a big heart. His strong family ties spanned India, the U.S., and Canada.
After backpacking across Europe with his cousin and brother, Dinesh married Sarita—the love of his life. Together, they built a life in Edmonton and raised three children: Bani, Shalini, and Shiv. A devoted husband and father, Dinesh helped start Edmonton’s first men’s cricket club, was active in the Hindu Society, and took pride in supporting his children’s many activities.
Dinesh and Sarita’s circle of friends in Edmonton and Calgary has remained close for over 50 years. After raising their children, the two continued to grow their bond, traveling to more than 25 countries with dear friends. They recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.
Dinesh was deeply proud to welcome his extended family—son-in-laws Vimlesh and Shaffique, daughter-in-law Anjali—and found great joy in his grandchildren, Aashna, Saif and Zayne, whom he loved dearly. Dinesh’s legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
