It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, uncle, and brother, Bharat Govindji Patel, who departed peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on May 11, 2025 at the age of 68.
He is survived by his wife, Ramila; his sons, Mehul (Sheral) and Rooshil; his granddaughter, Nyla; his siblings d. Jayantilal (Urmila), Niruben (Harish), Jashumati (d. Bhagu), Dinesh (Bhanu), Jagdish (Shakuntala) and his 11 nephews and nieces - including Neelam (Raj) and Shetal (Jaimini).
He is predeceased by his parents Govindji and Bhuliben Patel.
Bharat was born on March 23, 1957 in Sarpore Pardi, Gujarat, India. There, he spent his childhood with his parents and siblings on their family farm. In 1977, he graduated from S. B. Garda College in Navsari with a Bachelor of Arts. Bharat moved to Scarborough, Ontario in 1978. In 1979, Bharat moved to Wetaskiwin, Alberta and began his long career at Granpac Ltd. In 1983, he married Ramila. His first son, Mehul, was born in 1986, followed six years later by Rooshil in 1992.
Bharat and family moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 2003. After years of battling pulmonary fibrosis, Bharat received a double lung transplant in September of 2013. He retired in 2015. In 2022, his family welcomed their first grandchild, Nyla.
Bharat was known for his unwavering strength, determination, and the love he shared with everyone around him. His hobbies included tending to his large backyard garden, helping his sons with various DIY projects, and spending time with his granddaughter.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bharat’s funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at the Edmonton Crematorium and Funeral Home, 6403 Roper Rd NW, Edmonton, AB. All are welcome to attend and share their memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (https://www.albertacancer.ca/donate) and the Alberta Transplant Institute (https://www.ualberta.ca/en/alberta-transplant-institute/giving/index.html) in honour of Bharat’s memory. They also encourage others to consider registering as organ and tissue donors.
