Awtar Hoonjan Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Awtar Kaur Hoonjan (lovingly addressed as Ami, Bholly or Po). She completed her journey with us on May 12, 2024, at the age of 85.

Ami was born on January 18, 1939, in Nakuru, Kenya, to Parkash Kaur and Satwant Singh. Ami was the eldest of nine children. Ami moved to England in 1958 to complete studies in nursing. Upon completing her school, she went back home to Nakuru and worked as a nurse. She soon married Sardar Pritam Singh Hoonjan (Papa) in 1966. Ami and Papa relocated often, spending time in Kampala, Uganda, to Jagraon, Panjab, and Nottingham, England, before settling in Edmonton, Canada in 1976.

Ami and Papa welcomed Papa’s younger brother, Surinder Singh Hoonjan and Surinder’s wife, Gurcharan Kaur Hoonjan into their family. The couples lived as a joint family household and welcomed their children including Inderdeep Kaur, Patwant Singh, Gagandeep Kaur, and Khushwant Singh, and later the children’s spouses and grandchildren into their lives.

Ami worked as a registered nurse in Edmonton from 1976 until she retired in 2005. She worked at the Royal Alexander Hospital, Charles Camsell Hospital, Edmonton General Hospital, and Grey Nuns Hospitals. Ami spent her retired years as a beacon of light, supporting her family and friends.

Ami was loved as a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Ami had a warm, caring, and posh personality. She loved and supported her family endlessly, and enjoyed traveling, fashion, sewing, and speaking with loved ones. Ami will be remembered for her cat-eye glasses and ‘poof’ hairstyle. She was always put together, well-mannered, and punctual. She held her friendships close, as she spoke dearly about the friends she made during her time as a nurse.

Ami was a dedicated and devout Sikh, inspired by Guru’s grace. She spent countless hours doing seva, connecting with and reciting Gurbani, and inspiring and teaching her family about Sikhi. We thank the creator and creation, Ik Oankar, for allowing us to be a part of her journey.

Ami’s spirit with be carried forward by her family including:
