Ajodhia Sukhai Obituary

With deep sadness and love, we announce the passing of Mr. Ajodhia Persaud (AP) Sukhai (also known as Ivan), on Saturday June 29, 2024 at the age of 85.

AP is survived and forever remembered by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara (nee Bhagwandass); four children Dr. Pratima Ramlall (married to Dr. Kumar Ramlall), Satya Sukhai (married to Raj Raghunath), Krishna Sukhai, and Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai (married to Ainsley Sukhai); two grandchildren, Amit Ramlall and Meegan Sukhai; and, is Daddy to Patsy Hooblall. AP will also be lovingly remembered by his extended family, including siblings Roopnarine Sukhai (Bert) and Savitri Sukhai of Guyana, and Leila Rooplall; in-laws Fazia Sukhai, Bato Bhagwatpersaud, Deo Ramdeo, Karamchand Ramdeo, Omo Persaud and Debbie Ibbott, Norma Lall, and Menola Bhagwandass; his many nieces and nephews all around the world; and close friends Loaknarine Persaud of Elmira; Zemo Rahman of Canada; Dr Narine Sooknandan, John Carpenter and Harry Mittai of Guyana, among many others.

AP was predeceased by his parents, Sukhai and Kunti Sukhai, and Lily Seeraj and Rajpat; his siblings Adolphus Sukhai of Cincinnati, Deodat Sukhai of New York, Kewlamati Bhim of Guyana and Reoti (Lynette) Bhagwatpersaud of Florida; in-laws Cecilia Sukhai, Deanna Sukhai, Roop Singh Bhim, John Rooplall, Laco Ricketts, Cyril Ricketts, George Ibbott, Walleh Bhagwandass, Pooran Lall, Roodrani Singh, Sookdeo Singh, Latchman Persaud, and Sasechand Bhagwandass.

AP was a long-standing member of both the Lions Clubs and the Masonic Lodge. In his professional career, he served in management and executive roles at the Guyana Ministry of Agriculture, Continental Biscuits, Berger Paints, Sterling Products Limited of Guyana and UniLever Canada.

Funeral services according to Hindu rites, along with a public visitation, will take place on Thursday, July 04, 2024, at 9 am MT, at the Edmonton Crematorium and Funeral Home (6403 Roper Rd., Edmonton, AB).

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff of the Tertiary Palliative Care Unit at Grey Nuns Community Hospital, who cared so much and so well for AP during his stay there.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in AP’s honour may be made directly to the Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre, as gratefully received by the Gray House Guild. Instructions on how to donate online may be found on the Centre’s website.
